Here is a guide to the different ‘Assessment Sheets’ for both student and teacher. Teachers will need to become familiar with all types of assessment. Various sheets can be downloaded from this section. Scroll down for explanations about the following assessment documents:
1. The ‘Crescendo’ Ladder
What is the Ladder?: The ladder explains the different skills that should be developed through the programme. Level 1 is the lowest, level 5 is the highest:
What is a Crescendo?: Crescendo is the Italian word for ‘growing’, and the musical term for ‘getting gradually louder’. This is what a crescendo symbol looks like:
Assessment by Topic: Each topic comes with it’s own ladder, which can be found at the bottom of this page.
2. The Development Chart
This is a simple chart to help you track each pupil’s development throughout the pack. It uses a ‘traffic light’ colour code in order to make tracking simpler. You will need to download and print a sheet for each pupil (scroll to bottom of the page), and keep it for the entire programme. You can either ‘tick’ boxes, or add a number from the ‘Crescendo Ladder’ (above).
Question sheets are provided within ‘Assessment’ for each lesson. Here is an example of the questioning sheet, from Lesson 1:
4. Musical Terms: (for students)
New musical vocabulary will be introduced each lesson. To assess understanding of these terms, activity sheets are provided in the ‘Assessment’ section of each lesson. The example below has been taken from Lesson 1:
5. Story: (for students)
Most lessons introduce new parts of the ‘Voyage to the Moon’ story. To assess understanding of story events, activity sheets are provided in the ‘Assessment’ section of each lesson. There are also tips for how to use these sheets when student English and literacy levels vary. The example below has been taken from Lesson 1:
6. Self-Assessment [optional]: (for students)
Self-assessment is a crucial life skill that enables students to reflect on their work, leading to more independent learning. Providing the students with the worksheet below (from Lesson 1) is optional. However, if chosen not to use the sheets, it is encouraged that teachers verbally discuss the points with each student (one-on-one). This will form a stronger relationship between student and teacher, whilst also achieving the goals of self-assessment.
Either way, answers on the sheet or from verbal discussions should lead to a second discussion: The teacher can ask each student how they feel they can improve in areas of difficulty.
