Lesson Content + Exercise Information:

1. Solve the Anagram:
Tell the class to work in pairs to un-jumble the letters on the board
2. Discussion: Roles of a Leader:
Words on page are different establishments where a leader may be
Discuss who the leader of each of these establishments are/may be and what their roles are (to look after people, to teach etc.) and why they are
needed (order etc.)
3. Explain:
Explain that there are so many instruments in Offenbach’s orchestra. Each musician has a different role that changes throughout the music and so the orchestra has a leader to help keep order
Ask if anyone knows the name of the leader of an orchestra


4. Introduce the Conductor:
Explain the role of the conductor.
Select students to explain the musical terminology on the board
5. Video of a conductor in action:
Show short video of a conductor – before you show it say we will be looking out for how he interacts with the musicians – is he using his eyes, hands etc. and what is he doing with them, where does he stand etc

6. Class Exercise: Conducting to a 3-beat rhythm:

Resources to bring to this activity:

  • Plain paper (A4 1 for each pupil) and sellotape
  • Ready rolled conducting batons
Hand everyone a makeshift conducting baton – you can get them to quickly roll up a sheet of A4 paper and stick with sellotape.
Explain that the conductors most important job is to remind the musicians to keep time with the music.
Recap on time signature of Voyage to the Moon – 3 time (mainly)
Explain that a conductor has different hand motions for different time signatures – this is 3 time – demonstrate and have class repeat


7. Discussion: Conducting different instructions:
Invite a discussion on how we think the conductor tells musicians to play louder/softer or faster/slower or different rhythms
Ask for demonstrations of what people think
8. Group Composing Activity: Conducting and Following

Resources to bring to this activity:

  • Conducting baton (at least 1 per group)
  • Untuned Instruments

Display the group composing activity.

Separate the class into groups of 3 and complete the tasks on the board

Walk around and assess involvement, helping where needed

9. Class Exercise: Conducting with an Orchestra

Resources to bring for this activity:

  • Untuned instruments (at least 1 per person) OR made instruments from previous lessons
  • A stepping stool/podium
  • A conducting baton
Class Activity (with class made instruments)
Hand each student one of the instruments they made
Sit same instruments in a group – groups form semicircle around a raised podium
The teacher will stand on the podium and create a rhythm with their hands (2, 3 or 4 time).
The teacher will then look to a group of musicians who will
begin playing to the beat and right volume.
The teacher can then look at another group to join in, or tell the first group to stop with their hand etc.
Invite students to come to the front and have a go at becoming the conductor
10. Group Composing Exercise:

Resources to bring for this activity:

  • All work from previous independent composing exercises
  • Writing equipment
  • Instruments made/untuned instruments
Hand groups their work from all the previous weeks.

Tell them to go through the whole composition and time it with the music
