There are 8 suggested activities below for the teacher to complete in order to prepare for teaching  ‘lesson content’ for lesson 1.

1. Welcome Song:
Decide how to welcome each child to the Circle Time. Practice your welcome.  

  • You may use a ‘welcome’ song that you are familiar with; or,  
  • You can choose to say ‘good morning’ to each child individually; or,  
  • You may use our ‘welcome’ song (listen to music and view lyrics picture)

2. Discussion: Authors/Composers:
Prepare questions to prompt the children to share information about authors of their favourite booksPrepare visual cues to prompt answers, for example, pictures from familiar stories

3. Composer of Music: 

Learn the definition and role of a musical ‘composer’

  • Definition: a composer is a writer of music
 4. Storybook:
Read the whole storybook to become familiar with the story

  • While you read the story, listen to the ‘Voyage to the Moon’ music, which you can find in the storybook tab to become familiar with it
  • Take note of key characters, musical concepts and events within the story. Information on characters explored in this topic can be found in the ‘further information & tips tab’ for this lesson
  • In column 2 you can find our narrated story (used for KS1 and KS2)

5. ‘Music Adventure’ song

  • Sing the ‘Music Adventure’ song repeatedly until learned off-by-heart
  • Ensure you can sing it fluently with the ‘music only’ recording

6. The Prince’s Song: 

Sing the Prince’s song with the actions repeatedly until learned off by heart.
– Read the lyrics
– Listen to the tune
– Watch the video

Practice explaining the purpose of the prince’s song e.g. it reminds the prince about the lovely princess

Prepare questions to ask about the tone of the music e.g. did it make you feel scared or relaxed, etc.

7. Discussion: The Orchestra:

Prompt a discussion about how we make music – by singing, by playing instruments etc.

Learn the names of the different instruments in the orchestra, and also the definition of an orchestra – you will need to explain that when the orchestra plays altogether, the musicians are able to make exciting, grand and special music

8. Listen to the Narrated Music:

  • Listen to the narrated version of the music repeatedly so you are familiar with it – take note of the tone of each section
  • Create your own narrated version of the story and practice narrating it to the music (especially to the chorus)
  • This is for the ‘imagination time’ activity in the active lesson

9. Resources to bring to the lesson:

  • Percussion (untuned) instruments – one for each child
  • Plain A4 paper for each pupil
  • Crayons and other drawing material

  • Download and print the lesson activity sheets at the bottom of the page in ‘lesson content’ – practice explaining the activities as you play the slideshow (see point above)
  • Plan your own answers to the questions you will ask the children to prompt them and retain focus.
