There are 10 suggested activities below for the teacher to complete in order to prepare for teaching  ‘lesson content’ for lesson 12

1. Discussion: Leadership:

Prepare for a discussion on ‘leadership’ and familiar types of leaders

  • Prepare questions to prompt the children to share information about who is a leader? (Example answer ‘a teacher’ ‘a king’ etc.).  
  • You may wish to prompt answers by asking certain questions e.g. who leads our country? Who is the head of the classroom? Etc.

2. Definition: Learn the definition and role the ‘conductor’ of the orchestra:

  • Definition: he leads the orchestra  
  • He uses his body to lead the instruments – does not talk to them.  
  • Holds a baton in his hand in order to instruct the musicians.

4. Practice conducting to a 3-beat rhythm

  • Make a baton – roll up a sheet of A4 paper into a thin cylinder (length ways) and stick a piece of tape to hold it
  • Recap information from Circle Time 10 Preparation on playing 3-beat rhythms
  • Watch the video and copy the actions – you will want to mirror the actions in the video

5. Conduct to the chorus/’the Prince’s Song’

  • Use your ‘baton’ to practice conducting a 3 beat rhythm to the chorus (and singing the beats)
  • Make sure you can do it to the music clip!
  • Repeat until confident

Become familiar with Commodore Conductor:

Learn his poem off-by-heart and create actions to go with it (you may wish to bring a stool or podium to stand on in class)

Commodore Conductor is my name,
Leading others to keep in time’s my game,
I hold my baton way up high,
And count to as my arms fly.
I start up high for all to see,
To make the shape I’m counting 1 – 2 – 3!

7. Read the Story:

Read the whole storybook to recap the story and all the different instruments, symbols and characters discovered so far

Play the sound file in the next column to become familiar with how our narrated story matches the tone of the music
