Lesson Content + Exercise Information:

 1. What did we discover about our families?: Ask for volunteers to share their homework findings with the class.  
2. Discussion: Authors:
  1. Discuss what the word ‘author’ means [a person who writes books]
  2. Discuss the role of an author and any authors the children are familiar with including what they have written about.
3. Explain the connection between authors of books and composers of music: Explain how music has been created by a special type of author called a ‘composer’ and today they will learn about the composer of Voyage to the Moon.

Discuss what the purpose of their work is – to tell us a story, to give us interesting things to listen to or read.

 

4. Discussion: Jacques Offenbach: Either show the class the video and ask questions afterwards, or go through the facts about Offenbach using the ‘composer fact sheets’.
Questions to ask:

  1. What was the name of the composer
  2. Where did he live
  3. What instrument did he play
  4. How old was he when he learned to play the violin

What kind of music did he like to write

5. Composer Lesson Activity:
  1. Split the class into four-five groups (see ‘how to prepare’ section for grouping suggestions).
  2. Hand each group a sheet of A3 paper, the timeline sentence sheet, and a set of ‘fact pictures’

Task 1: Ask each group to match the sentences to the correct pictures that can complete the sentence.

Task 2: Once the above has been completed, have the groups write up the sentences chronologically on the A3 piece of paper.

 6. Composer Performing Activity
  1. Place the class in the same groups as before.
  2. If available, hand each group untuned instruments (otherwise the children can make noises with classroom materials or their bodies/voices)
  3. Tell the groups to read the sentences together and to use the instruments/voices/bodies to illustrate the sentences
    – One or two children from each group to narrate as they play
    – Practice and perform in front of the class
  4. Advanced pupils can create their own stories.
 
7. Homework Write a short narrative about the imaginary adventure you went on with your family member (from the previous homework).

Write 5-7 sentences that include noisy events. Afterwards, describe how you would make noises to illustrate these events just like the classroom activity.
