There are 8 suggested activities below for the teacher to complete in order to prepare for teaching  ‘lesson content’ for lesson 4

1. Discussion: Structure of a Song:

The discussion this week focuses on elements of a general song. The aim is for the pupils to understand the different components of a song, especially the structure of a chorus.

Pupils will have researched and brought in songs from homework – they will then get to discuss these with the class.


2. Prepare an explanation about a ‘chorus’ of a song:

A chorus to a song is most often the first tune a composer writes for his music.

The chorus is the part that links all of the different verses together.

It’s got to be easy to remember, it’s got to be catchy and not over-complicated. It’s the part that’s repeated again and again and if it’s good, people don’t get bored of it.

A chorus can really make or break a song. 

3. Voyage to the Moon Chorus:

Understand key elements of the Voyage to the Moon chorus:

– The tone is mellow and calm

– It connects each verse of the music

– The melody is simple and easy to remember

– The melody is played by the French horn, the harmony is played by the Cello

The reason people loved Offenbach’s music is because whether it was a fast song or a slow song, he always wrote a chorus that people remembered and he used the appropriate instruments that suited the theme

5. Practice singing the Beats to the Chorus Melody:

  • Practice playing/clapping, saying/singing the numbers of the beats from the beginning of the music until the end of the 2nd verse
  • Keep to the correct ‘loudness’/volume of the music
  • Make sure you can sing and play the chorus beats off-by-heart, with and without the music

  • Percussion (untuned) instruments – one for each pupil at least
  • Balloons – one for each pupil
  • 6 printed copies of the ‘task instruction sheet’
  • 6 printed copies of the ‘task observation sheet’
  • A printed copy of the unlabelled French horn for each pupil (A5)
  • Printed copies of the Chorus Melody (1 between 2)
  • Group composition work from previous lessons
  • Writing Equipment
  • Lined paper for each pupil
  • Recording devices if available
