Lesson Content + Exercise Information:

1. Discussion: Hand, eye and mouth coordination:
Tell the class to:
Look at the board
On 3, speak the words on the board out loud
On 3, perform the actions written on the board
Discuss which 3 body parts performed functions in the exercise
2. Explain:
Explain that in order to play most instruments, your body has to perform multiple functions at the same time. This is especially true if you are playing an instrument from which two families – woodwind and brass


3. Group Activity: Reactions: Hand, Eye & Mouth Coordination:
Have students come to the front of the class in groups of 3 – assess correctness as they perform the instructions on the board

5. Introduce the Class Exercise: Music Comprehension:

Explain that are now going to listen to verse 3 of Voyage to the Moon. Our job is to try and work out what happens in the story after the prince tosses the crown aside.

Explain the process of the class exercise e.g. first we will, next we will etc.

6. Class Exercise Part 1: Read the story options:

1. Introduce the story options

2. Select students to read the options on the board out loud

7. Class Exercise Part 2: Discuss the text:

1. Synonyms: Go round the class and ask each pupil, in turn to share what comes to mind when they think of the words on the board. The mood or tone of the story, the themes it may encompass

2.Write on Board: As the class says their opinions, write these on the board under the corresponding word – you can have 3 pupils stand at the board writing these to increase focus and enjoyment

3.Understanding Text: Ask questions about what the class think the mood, tone or atmosphere in the story options may be in relation to the music.

8. Class Exercise Part 3: Listen to the Music:

1.Remind class that as they listen to the music, they must decide which scenario matches the mood/tone of the music

2.Play the music

3.Discuss thoughts about which story the class thinks the composer is telling – you can always play the clip again for prompting

4.Discuss pitch, timbre, tone, duration etc. – can demonstrate with instruments and remind by replaying the music

5.Discuss what happened at the end of the verse (crescendo)


9. Display the Answer:

1.Display the answer page from the exercise

2.Play the music


10. Introduce the Oboe:

Introduce the oboe – play the video of the Haydn Oboe Concerto (FROM 1:49 – time in video when the oboe solo starts). Use this to discuss how it is played and held, and it’s timbre (compare first clip which is oboe, to second clip which is the violin)

In the YouTube video, the oboe plays notes with a very long AND a very short duration. As you play the video, tell pupils to count out loud the longest note of the oboe (this is around the 2 minute mark). Play the clip again to see if the pupils can sing the long note alongside the oboe.


11. Independent Exercise: What Can You Hear?

  • A copy of the answers (for the teacher) so you can mark the work as soon as the exercise is complete:


Hand each pupil an observation sheet.

12. Create an Oboe:

Resources to bring for this exercise:

  • A straw for each pupil
  • Scissors for each pupil
  • An Activity Instruction sheet
  • Your own ‘straw oboe’ to use as an example
1.Discuss vibrations – when you blow out, your throat/vocal cords are not vibrating – your lips are

2.Make long and short notes

3.Give manuscript – in pairs must write 4 bars of both long and short notes and play on their ‘oboes’ – hand manuscript to other groups to perform

4.Discuss what you change with your breath to do long or short notes

1.To plan and begin writing their story for verse 3
