There are 9 suggested activities below for the teacher to complete in order to prepare for teaching  ‘lesson content’ for lesson 8

Instructions: Music Clips: Pictures/videos:
1. Discussion: Hand, eye and mouth coordination:

The discussion this week focuses on multitasking – using multiple bodily functions to respond/perform to signs

2. Prepare an explanation about multitasking with instruments:

Explain that in order to play most instruments, your body has to perform multiple functions at the same time. This is especially true if you are playing an instrument from woodwind and brass families

3. Recap the Story so far:

The first clip is without the narration, the second is with

Recap events in the story, taking notes about the tone of each section

The third clip is verse 3 of the music – this will be the focus of the lesson


4. Recap Instrument Timbres:

– Timbre is the distinctive sound of an instrument.

– Each of the instruments have been recorded playing the introduction from Voyage to the Moon

– Listen to each of the recordings to hear the distinctive differences between each instrument and take note of their qualities/tone

5. Oboe – sound & appearance:

Become familiar with the oboe

  • Watch video of a oboist playing an oboe
  • Listen to the introduction of ‘Voyage to the Moon’ being played by the whole orchestra, then by the oboe only and then by the violin only – note the difference in timbre (distinctive sound)
  • Listen to the third verse of music – the oboe is the instrument heard straight after the cello (12 seconds into the clip)
  • Create an oboe out of a straw

 6. Verse 3: Who’s Playing?

Become familiar with the instrument solos in verse 3 of the music – practice saying the names of the instruments to the music clips as they are heard

Note down tone of each part played by each instrument.
