Lesson Content + Exercise Information:

1. Introduce the Topic: Consolidation & the Flute:
Instead of a discussion today, we’re going to jump right into learning about the flute.

2. Recap on Instrument Timbres Part 1:
Recap on all timbres by testing the class using different recordings
Discuss differences in timbre between the flute and oboe
Order of clips in next column:
1) Oboe
2) Violin
3) Flute
4) Cello
5) French horn

3. The Flute versus the Oboe. 
Play the video FROM 3:15 (where the oboe and flute begin). Have the class discuss which instruments are which (flautist on left, oboist on right).
Discuss the differences between how each musicians holds their instrument (to the side or in front).
Explain that the flute and oboe are having a conversation with each other – one plays, the other responds.
Discuss the duration, tone, timbre of each instrument as they play.
Also discuss other instruments that can be seen and heard.
4. Recap on Instrument Timbres Part 2:

Play the clip of the final chorus and verse – as they play, discuss pitch etc. with the class, and discuss what instruments are playing.

5. Independent Exercise: What Can You Hear?:

Resources to bring for this activity:

  • A printed copy of the observation sheet for each pupil
  • Writing Equipment
Then play the clip with the narration and have the pupils fill in the observation sheet

6. Group Exercise Part 1: Recap beat values:

Resources to bring for this activity:

  • A printed copy of all of the manuscript pages for each group
  • Writing Equipment
  • Highlighters
  • Untuned instruments
Put the pupils in groups of 4 – assign an instrument to each group – flute, oboe, violin, cello

Hand out instruments to each pupil – give similar sounding instruments to each group

Recap all of the beat values

Hand out the manuscript pages to each group:

7. Group Exercise Part 2: Play to the beat of verse 3:

Tell the groups to highlight their parts on the manuscript. Have the class practice (with and without the music)

Give groups 5-10 minutes to practice

Perform with the music as a class

8. Independent Exercise: Connect the beat values:

Resources to bring for this activity:

  • A printed copy of the beat test for each pupil
 Hand out the beat test to each pupil

Tell pupils to write their names at the top of the page.

Give pupils 2 minutes to connect the symbols to the correct values

9. Group Composing Exercise:

Resources to bring for activity:

  • All group composing work so far
  • A copy of the final chorus lyrics for each pupil (there are 10 on a page to cut up
  • Sheets of manuscript paper for each group
  • Untuned instruments
  • Lined paper
  • Writing Equipment
Hand groups their work from the previous weeks.

Hand groups a copy of plain manuscript

Hand groups a copy of the final chorus – play the music of the final chorus and verse and then tell pupils to rewrite the lyrics of the final chorus

For pupils that finish this exercise, tell them to begin writing their own finale on manuscript paper. They can use untuned instruments to help them write this. They should also plan which orchestral instruments they would choose to play the different parts
