Full School Concert

 

Solo Roles:

These include vocal solos and the most lines to remember. It is advised to select older pupils.

Have the nursery and reception kids sitting along the front but not on the stage all with untuned instruments. Teacher or older child in front of them to instruct.

Moon Dancers – A selection of students, perhaps from years 5 and 6, will perform a dance. In Rehearsals they should select a piece of classical music to choreograph their dance to. They can choose any piece of classical music. Please direct them to selections from the recommended music section to give them ideas, and they can then browse through YouTube to find something suitable. You can also contact us if you would like a specific recommendation.  

 

The scene is set in 1875

 

[SCENE 1]

 

Curtain rises. Year 2 pupils are spread over the stage. 8 pupils should have a poster hanging around their neck, each with a different letter spelling the word ‘AUDIENCE’. Nursery and Reception pupils sit on the floor in front of the stage, ready for the next few scenes.

 

 

[Music plays]

Curtain goes down, Year 2 pupils exit the stage.

 

 

 

[SCENE 2]

 

Curtain rises. Year 3 pupils split into two groups, one on each side of the stage. In the middle are a desk and a chair. There is a poster on the desk with the words ‘Voyage to the Moon’ on it, and also a pen on the desk.

 

[Music plays]

 

Year 3: [singing Oh Jacques Offenbach]

 

[VERSE 1]

There once was a man named Jacques [stamp stamp]

What a jolly chap [clap clap]

He liked pranks and jokes cause he was a fun bloke

Oh Jacques Offenbach [stamp clap]

 

Enter Jacques Offenbach who waves at the audience and goes to sit at the desk. During verse 2 he pretends to write on the poster.

 

[VERSE 2]

One day Jacques did decide [stamp stamp]

To get off his backside [clap clap]

For the world he did write, music each day and night

Oh Jacques Offenbach [stamp clap]

 

[VERSE 3]

What we bring to you today [stamp stamp]

Is a marvellous display [clap clap]

Of an Offenbach piece, welcome to the release of

Voyage to the Moon! [arms do upward rocket movement and finish in big circle]

 

Jacques Offenbach holds up the poster to the audience when the last line is sung.

Jacques Offenbach: Thank you all for coming, there’s so much we have to share. The show we will present to you is quite beyond compare. Just a quick foreword so you understand it better, I originally created the show as an operetta. We are all born with an instrument – indeed, I mean the ‘voice’. We’ll sing songs to tell the story – I know, what a good choice! So thank you for your patience. Now it’s time for me to go! Without further ado…let’s get on with the show!

 

Exit Jacques Offenbach

 

 

[SCENE 2]

 

Scene opens in the palace ballroom. There are chairs in the centre at the back of the stage for the orchestra, and a podium for the conductor. There is a throne on the far right of the stage. The orchestra members enter the stage with their instruments. They stand in the centre at the front of the stage and face the audience.

 

[Music plays]

 

Orchestra: [singing the Royal Orchestra]

 

[VERSE 1]

We are the royal orchestra

Musicians in a band

Our instruments are special

Their music is grand

 

[VERSE 2]

We’re at the royal palace where

King Vlan has invited us to play

Now we will tell the tale

Of what will take place in the palace today

 

[Music stops. Song FINISH]

The orchestra members take their seats at the back of the stage.

 

Orchestra member 1: While setting up our instruments and warming up to sing, we were the first to hear a rehearsal of an announcement from the king.

 

Enter King Vlan from the left. He marches to the front of the left side of the stage, turns and faces the audience.

 

King Vlan: My name is King Vlan, and I have a plan, to give up my crown,

 

Orchestra member 2: He said

 

King Vlan: It’s hard being King when you’re a tired old thing – so it’s time to take my crown off my head. You will soon meet my son as his travelling is done, and I will step down to pass him the throne. He will hear what I say at the party today, where I will make this publically known. [He turns and faces the orchestra]

 

The orchestra stands and bows to the King

 

Orchestra member: Welcome, your majesty! We will make this party come alive!

 

King Vlan: I hope that you’re ready to play! The guests are about the arrive!

 

[The orchestra musicians exchange worried glances with each other]

 

Orchestra member: Nearly, your Majesty, we await our conductor.

 

King Vlan: [Looking confused] A conductor? What’s that?

 

Orchestra: He’s the leader of the orchestra!

 

[Music plays]

 

Orchestra Members: [singing Welcome the Conductor]

Nursery and reception kids to be the conductor – make a song

[VERSE 1]

Conductor of the orchestra

Please come and take your stand

Conductor of the orchestra

It’s time to lead your band

 

[Enter the conductor from the right side of the stage. The King and Orchestra turn to face him. He stops at the front on the right. He smiles and bows to the king, then to the audience, then to his orchestra, before taking his place on the podium, facing the audience]

 

[VERSE 2]

So hold your baton high – [Conductor holds the baton high]

In the air for all to see

Our bells will chime, we’ll keep in time

 

Conductor: One, two, three! [He moves his baton in the conduct-3 pattern as he says the numbers (down, across and up again), then to hold both hands out to the sides, bow slightly to the audience, straighten up and smile at them]

 

[Music stops. Song FINISH]

 

Sheet-holder to hold up ‘applause sign’ to the audience as conductor holds out hands to the sides. Conductor to wave hands slightly, encouraging the audience to applaud. The applause sign is to be held up for 10-20 seconds. The nursery and reception children play their instruments softly. The conductor turns on the podium to face the orchestra. The orchestra musicians pick up their instruments and hold them, ready to ‘play’. King Vlan hurries to sit on his throne.

 

Enter Microscope, who stands to the right of the King. The teachers should instruct them to play louder and louder and loudest as the guests come on stage. Enter the party guests who are smiling or laughing (silently). Guests can bow or curtsy to the King who smiles or nods his head in acknowledgment. Once everyone is on stage, they stand in groups of two’s and three’s, but leave a path from the left entrance to the King’s throne that runs along the front of the stage. Everyone freeze once they are in position.

 

[Music plays]

 

The conductor conducts and the orchestra musicians ‘play’ their instruments. The party guests silently chat and laugh amongst themselves. Nursery and reception play instruments softly in time with the music.

 

[Music stops]

 

The orchestra stops playing. Enter Prince Caprice. He looks around at the guests in confusion. The guests nearest the prince face him and bow. He marches determinedly along the front of the stage to his father’s throne. As he passes guests, they turn to him and bow. They straighten up and watch.

 

Microscope: [Stepping forward, taking Prince Caprice’s hand] Welcome back, Prince Caprice. I hope your travels went well!

 

Prince Caprice: They did indeed, Microscope, I have many stories to tell [Microscope falls back to his position on the right of the throne]

 

King Vlan: [Leaping up] Caprice, my son, it’s been too long.

 

Orchestra member 2: The King leapt up and cried

 

King Vlan: I do hope that you’re back for good, and will maybe find a bride?

 

Prince Caprice: [Embraces King Vlan so the audience can still see his face. He whispers loudly] Why have you thrown a party? I need to talk to you alone!

 

King Vlan: [Pulling away from the hug, holding Prince Caprice’s arms and smiling at him. Loudly] But I needed an audience! It’s time for me to pass you the throne!

 

Prince Caprice gasps in shock. The party guests start cheering and clapping as the Nursery and Reception class play their instruments loudly.

 

King Vlan: [To the guests] And so friends, I present Caprice, my son shall be your king.

 

Orchestra member: Prince Caprice found his voice and shouted in shock

 

Prince Caprice: I shall do no such thing!

 

Orchestra member: The crowd stared and gasped. The King’s anger rose from humiliation. Microscope ushered the guests away to control the situation.

 

Exit Party Guests

 

Orchestra member: And now, before we play again to protect Prince Caprice from scorn, we’d like to introduce you to an instrument known as the French Horn

 

Enter Year 2 pupils. Each has a French horn picture. They take places all over the right side and middle of the stage so that King Vlan, Prince Caprice and Microscope are still visible to the audience. Give them the untuned instruments

 

Year 2 pupils: I’m Freddy the French horn big and round. My mouthpiece is used to make special sounds. I’ve three gold buttons that can be pressed to make brass sounds that I like best.

 

 

[Music plays]

 

Orchestra member: And so the French horn player got ready to play. His mellow music would help the Prince speak clear. Caprice had a secret dream to travel to the moon, and it was time for his father to hear.

 

Year 2 pupils pretend to play French horns, dancing in a mellow, slow fashion around the stage, swaying in time with the music (waltzing can be done here). The year 1 students should do this also.

 

Year 1 pupils can come on with conducting batons and conduct in three time

 

Prince Caprice: [To King Vlan sings ‘Can you See’]

Can you see?

Up in space

Twinkling stars are all over the place

Moonlight beams

Down on me

I will find a Princess there you’ll see!

 

[Music stops. Song FINISH]

 

Year 2 pupils freeze

 

King Vlan: [bursts out laughing]

 

Microscope: [laughing too] Oh, good one, Prince Caprice!

 

[Music plays]

 

Prince Caprice silently argues with King Vlan. King Vlan and Microscope look worried as the Nursery, Reception and Year 1’s and 2’s sing, ‘Can you See’.

 

Nursery, reception and Year 2 pupils: [Sing ‘Can you See’ with the actions] Kids to do conducting

Can you see?

Up in space

Twinkling stars are all over the place

Moonlight beams

Down on me

I will find a Princess there you’ll see!

 

[Music stops. Song FINISH]

 

Exit Year 1 and 2 pupils, King Vlan, Microscope and Prince Caprice.

 

 

 

 

[SCENE 3]

 

The scene takes place in a room in the palace. The throne is still in the same place, as are the Orchestra Members, Nursery and Reception pupils.

 

Orchestra member: The hot topic of gossip had the kingdom obsessed. Going to the moon – was Prince Caprice possessed?

 

Orchestra member: You see, in 1875, the year of this story, talk of flying through space was no more than allegory.

 

Orchestra member: But our prince would not be swayed. With his heart full of hope, he set off to seek council from the genius, Microscope.

 

[Music plays]

 

Music starts for ‘I want more’. During the introduction: Enter Prince Caprice, King Vlan and Microscope, followed by 4 palace servants. King Vlan goes and sits in the throne. Microscope stands silently by his side. Prince Caprice on other side facing throne and silently arguing his case to Microscope while King Vlan sits looking cross. The 4 palace servants are on the opposite sides of the stage. They are cleaning with brooms, window washers etc. Occasionally they pause, turn to each other, cup a hand to their mouths pretending to whisper, then return to their cleaning.

 

Nursery to come on stage and do a twinkle twinkle like song

[Singing ‘I want more’]

 

[VERSE 1]

Palace servants:

See the moon

So far away

There at night

And gone each day

 

Prince Caprice:

On the moon

That’s where I want to be

 

Microscope:

[Speaking] Sire,

C’est impossible

‘Cause it’s the 19th century

 

[VERSE 2]

King Vlan: [music in minor key]

No way up

And no way down

In that air

You’d surely drown

 

Prince Caprice:

[To King Vlan]

It’s where I want to go

To explore

[King Vlan exits in a huff, Prince Caprice turns to audience]

There’s something missing in my life

I want more

 

[Same tune as above]

I wonder what’s up there

 

Microscope:

In that place?

 

[Turns to Microscope]

Prince Caprice:

Please, help me Microscope?

I must get to space

[Microscope sighs and they both exit. The palace servants exit too]

Nursery and reception come onto the stage. Nursery are the stars and Reception are planets

 

Little stars

Shine so bright

Shine tonight

 

We are little stars

Up in space

Can you see the moon’s glowing face

 

Princess Fantasia:

Little stars

Shine so bright

Watching your

Sprinkling light

 

From the Moon I see

All that you bring

You bring me hope and warmth while I sing

 

 

 

 

[Lights dim slightly. Enter King Cosmos and the 6 Moon Guards marching. King Cosmos sits in the throne. The guards bow to him and then stand to attention facing the audience]

 

 

 

[VERSE 3]

Moon Guards:

See the Earth

Way down below

[Enter Melody]

In the night

They see us glow

 

Melody:

Oh how romantic,

It makes me swoon,

I feel in LOVE!

[Everyone gasps]

With that beyond the moon

 

King Cosmos: [Angrily] Arrest her and take her to the volcano!

 

Melody is arrested and dragged off by the guards. Exit guards and girl.

 

Melody: [shrieking] Love! Love! Love!

 

Enter Princess Fantasia holding a book

 

Princess Fantasia:

[Indifferently]

Another one, Father?

 

King Cosmos:

[Shaking his head and stands up]

Fantasia, I must contain this disease they call love!

I’m off to the volcano to give that girl a shove!

 

Princess Fantasia:

Father, wait!

Let’s give her a chance. Her health may not yet be grave…

Send her to the market instead to become a slave

 

Orchestra Member:

King Cosmos looked at his daughter, his face turning ashen

 

King Cosmos:

I do hope, Fantasia, that these aren’t signs of compassion.

 

[King Cosmos exits]

 

[VERSE 4]

Princess Fantasia:

[Looking down at the Earth]

Is this life

The only one

Is there more

Beyond the sun

 

[Looks at the book in her hand]

Read every book

Travelled the moon’s face

Learned all there is

To learn in space

 

I feel there’s something missing

Is it true?

Is LOVE – really a disease?

I wish I knew

 

[Enter Prince Caprice on other end of the stage both go to the front looking at audience]

 

[OUTRO]

Prince Caprice:

It’s where I want to go

To explore

 

Princess Fantasia:

There’s something missing in my life

 

Prince Caprice and Princess Fantasia:

[Music stops. Song FINISH]

 

Exit Prince Caprice and Princess Fantasia

 

 

[SCENE 4]

Scene opens with Microscope sitting at a desk in the centre of the stage. He is frozen. There is a quill in his hand. The desk and the floor surrounding it are littered with papers and books.

 

Orchestra member: The palace genius, Microscope, was a man of maths and science. A loyal friend and confidant, in whom you could place trust and reliance.

 

Orchestra member: He wanted to help Caprice, and so that very afternoon

He tried to find a way for the prince to voyage to the moon.

 

Orchestra member: His mind was alight, passionate and bright; ideas began to spin. We need some accompanying music – let’s welcome the violin

 

Enter Year 2 pupils. Each has a cut out of a violin and bow. They stand on the left side of the stage, leaving Microscope visible in the centre.

 

Year 2 pupils: I am Violet the Violin. I like to rest under your chin. My sounds are high, my body small, so pick me up with bow and all!

 

Kids to do a dance to violin music – send yafit violin clip

 

Conductor: Please listen closely, for when you hear the music’s volume grow, this is what musicians like to call a crescendo.

 

Enter Year 1 pupils. Each has a Crescendo sign picture. They stand on the right side of the stage. The words of the poem can be on the back of their picture to read off.

 

Year 1 pupils: Crescendo Croc is very keen to show us all just what he means. For at the start his sound is small, then he gradually ends in a great big ROAR!

 

Nursery and Reception create a crescendo with their instruments.

 

[Music plays]

 

As the violin music plays, Nursery and Reception students pretend to play violins and bows.

Year 1 students should dance quietly on their tiptoes, making gradually louder sounds by stamping their feet and clapping their hands as the crescendo happens in the music.

Year 2 pupils pretend to play violins with their cut outs, swaying in time with the music, and creating bigger movements during the crescendo.

The conductor conducts the orchestra as the violinists ‘play’ their instruments.

Microscope is studying books, writing frantically on papers. As the crescendo occurs, Microscope picks up a piece of paper he has been writing on holds it up in the air, then stands up and on the final note of the crescendo…

 

Microscope: [Exclaims] I’m a genius!

 

Exit Microscope. He runs off the stage with the paper. Music is still playing. Years 1 and 2, Nursery and Reception class sing the chorus as it plays.

[SCENE 5]

 

The orchestra are in the same place as before, as Nursery and Reception. There is a canon in the middle of the stage. Jacques Offenbach is standing next to the canon, hands on hips and looking proud.

 

[Music plays]

 

During the introduction, enter year 3 and 4 pupils. They march all around the canon in time with the music, before standing still and facing the audience, keeping the space in front of Jacques Offenbach and the canon free.

 

Year 3 and 4: [singing ‘There’s a canon on stage’. Each group to sing alternate lines]

 

[VERSE 1]

Oh dear

Can you see?

There’s a canon on stage

What was Jacques, Offenbach

Thinking when he wrote this page

 

[VERSE 2]

He must be

[Pause] crazy

Absolutely absurd

But then again

Space women and men

Were at that time unheard of

 

[VERSE 3]

Indeed it’s Microscope’s plan

Put the prince inside

A shell as his ride

Good luck getting this past King Vlan

 

[VERSE 4]

Oh yes

Don’t forget

Sorry to now make you moan

Canons aren’t safe

They won’t take you to space

So please don’t try this at home

 

[Music stops. Song FINISH]

 

Exit Jacques Offenbach, Year 3 and Year 4 pupils.

 

Enter King Vlan, Microscope, Prince Caprice and 3 technicians in lab coats who are holding clipboards with papers attached.

 

King Vlan: [barely containing his anger] A CANON? Microscope, have you gone mad? No, non, this shan’t be done! I shall not BLAST Caprice to space and lose my only son!

 

Lab Technician 1: Your Majesty, in terms of speed there is no quicker way. With the right amount of gunpowder Caprice could be there in a day.

 

Lab Technician 2: And if we place him in an unbreakable shell, I daresay that Caprice, will almost certainly journey safely and arrive there in one piece!

 

Lab Technician 3: We’ll send him with provisions, so he can eat and quench his thirst.

 

Orchestra Member: The King was shocked and livid, his temper fit to burst.

 

People on stage freeze.

 

Orchestra Member: It’s like a piece of music, when two instruments collide; one playing songs so light of heart, the other bubbling inside.

 

Orchestra Member: And so here are two instruments, one high-pitched and one low; the lower one the cello and the higher, the oboe.

 

Enter Year 1 pupils, each with a big picture of a cello and bow. They stand on the left of the stage. They can have the words to the poem on the back of their pictures.

 

Year 1 pupils: [In a low voice] I’m Cedric Cello big and bold. You must be sitting down to hold, and pull a bow across my strings to make low sounds and music things.

 

Enter Year 2 pupils, each with a picture of an oboe. They stand on the right of the stage.

 

Year 2 pupils: [In a high voice] I’m Olive Oboe thin and lean. I use ten fingers as a team. Purse your lips tightly around the reed to make clear sounds with grace and speed.

 

Orchestra Member: Our cellists and our oboe players are about to play their solo,

Before they start you will be taught about what you need to play the oboe.

 

[Song – ‘I have ten fingers’ – sung by Nursery and Reception – they stand]

 

[Music plays]

 

Nursery & Reception:

I have ten fingers

Now let’s count them

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10!

F-f-f-fingers

Let’s have some fun

Reception:

Our hands are stars that twinkle bright and small

Fingers ten, the oboe thin and tall

Like the stars the oboe gleams

Nursery & Reception:

I have ten fingers

[Music stops. Song FINISH]

 

Sheet holder holds up the ‘applause’ sign for the audience.

 

Conductor: And now…the cello and the oboe!

 

[Music plays]

 

Conductor conducts orchestra.

For the cello part:

Cellists in orchestra play. Year 1’s stamp their feet, angry faces, quietly singing the low tune of the cello using the word ‘Dum’. As the cello music gets happier, and their expressions lift.

King Vlan is stamping his feet in time with the music and shaking his head

 

For the oboe part:

Oboe players in the orchestra play. Year 2’s use their hands to make Hula Dance Hand motions in time with the oboe music (research online for YouTube videos) –

 

Alternatively, the Year 1 and 2 pupils can exit the stage after introducing their instruments, and Year 4’s can create a dance sequence together to perform to the music

.

Prince Caprice, Microscope and the Technicians are silently trying to wear down King Vlan.

 

When the violins join in:

 

Conductor: [Exclaims] and the violins too! Crescendo now everyone.

 

At the end of the crescendo:

 

King Vlan: Fine I give up! But I’m coming with you. Don’t smirk at me Microscope – you’re joining us too.

 

Prince Caprice rushes forward and embraces his father. Microscope faints.

 

[Music stops. Song FINISH]

 

Exit year 1 and 2 pupils (or Year 4 pupils if they are on stage)

 

Orchestra Member: And just how the oboe and the violin turned the cello’s tone around, King Vlan had had his opinions changed, and he too would be leaving the ground.

 

Nursery and reception kids have backs to to the audience – maybe at the beginning or during or songs but they have to watch the play

 

Exit Prince Caprice, Microscope and Lab Technicians. King Vlan circles the canon, pausing to inspect it every so often.

 

Orchestra Member: The gossiping began once more, but the King was far from mad. He knew he would devote his entire life to the one who called him ‘dad’.

 

[Music plays]

 

King Vlan: [singing, ‘Light the Fuse’]

Think you know what a father should be?

Sometimes life, throws you opportunity.

Spent so many years, as the father to a kingdom

And now I have fears, but Caprice comes first.

 

He travelled without me

I let him go alone

Always knowing

He would one day come home

 

But this adventure

No one can be sure

And if it is his last one

It’s time to join him and explore

 

Exit King Vlan

 

Enter Years 3 and 4 marching onto the stage in time with the music. Take positions all over the stage and continue marching on the spot. Leave space for the audience to still see the canon.

 

Years 3 and 4:

Light the fuse

Sparks alight

Blast the canon

Through the night

 

Enter King Vlan, Prince Caprice, Microscope and the 3 Lab technicians. They walk up to the canon. The travellers each have a suitcase.

 

Light the fuse

Blast them high

Watch that shell fly

Through the sky

 

Singing quietly – sing each line a louder and louder. Reception and Nursery play instruments in the same volume as the singers.

 

Light the fuse

Blast them high

Take them safely

Through the sky

 

Nursery and Reception play their instruments as loud as possible. Lights go off. Instruments and music stop.

 

[Music stops. Song FINISH]

 

 

Curtain goes down.

 

Interval.

 

Nursery and Reception classes can go home at this point.

 

 

[SCENE 6]

 

The curtain rises. The scene takes place in a small community; there are houses, a bench on the left of the stage where Orbit, Satellite, Gismo and Crescent sit having a drink together. There are 2 Moon Children sitting with their mothers, Beam and Galaxy, and playing with a ball on the right of the stage. The orchestra is still in the same place. Groucho is overseeing the scene standing in the middle of the stage. There are 3 ladies with shopping bags walking across the stage.

Orchestra Member: In the small Moon town of Cratergate, on a warm and pleasant evening, the residents were unaware of the guests they would soon be receiving.

 

Orchestra Member: The Moon Guard’s leader, Groucho, stood up proud and tall. He watched the happy children who were playing with their ball.

 

Orchestra Member: He watched their mothers chatting, and the men who sipped their tea. He watched the ladies discuss the items they’d bought on a shopping spree.

 

Orchestra Member: Suddenly a whirring sound had everyone turn in fright. They all jumped up, and screamed and ran, as the shell was speeding at them through the night.

 

Everyone starts screaming and running around the stage. There is a big crash in the distance. Enter King Cosmos, Queen Popotte and the Moon Guards.

 

King Cosmos: SILENCE!

 

Everyone freezes.

 

King Cosmos: I shall not tolerate this behaviour, Groucho you should know! Make that kind of racket again and you’re all off to the volcano!

 

Groucho: But your Highness…

 

King Cosmos: Careful Groucho, now do not displease me with your tales

 

Beam: Oh, sir,

 

Satellite: But sir,

 

Gismo: Please sir,

 

Groucho: You must hear of the details!

 

Crescent: There was a crash

 

Galaxy: From over there [pointing]

 

Orbit: We do not tell a lie!

 

Sapphire: A big ball

 

Ruby: No, a giant ball

 

Emerald: Fell straight out of the sky!

 

King Cosmos: A giant flying ball, you say? Do you take me for a fool? [Getting angry]

 

Orchestra member: Then Queen Popotte stepped in and said

 

Queen Popotte: Oh Cosmos, keep your cool! Just send several of the Moon Guards to go and check it out.

 

King Cosmos: As you wish, but lava awaits the residents if their story is in doubt!

 

Orchestra member: And so the guards ran off to check

 

Moon Guards 1, 2 and 3 run offstage

 

Orchestra member: King Cosmos stood in wait.

 

Queen Popotte: [to King Cosmos] Never have I heard such panic from the residents of Cratergate!

 

The residents of Cratergate form a line running across the back of the stage. King Cosmos and Queen Popotte stand at the front of the left side of the stage, looking towards the opposite entrance. Moon Guards 4, 5 and 6 stand behind them.

 

Enter King Vlan, Prince Caprice and Microscope. Moon Guards 1, 2 and 3 follow behind them, with swords pointed at the travellers. They all walk to the centre of the stage and stop, facing King Cosmos and Queen Popotte.

 

Moon Guard 1: Your Majesty, Groucho was right! We found a giant shell! And when we broke it open, out these three fell!

 

Moon Guard 2: It landed on some houses, destroying half a road!

 

Cratergate residents gasp. King Cosmos steps forward angrily, but Queen Popotte puts a hand on his arm to stop him and calm him down.

 

Queen Popotte: [to the travellers] maybe you should explain yourselves or my husband may explode.

 

King Vlan: [hands outstretched] we are travellers from Earth

 

Microscope: [quickly] and come in peace

 

King Vlan and Prince Caprice nod vigorously

 

Orchestra Member: Microscope inserted

 

King Vlan: We’re terribly sorry about the crash – we thought the moon was deserted! Please pardon us, your Majesty, we only came to learn. Please teach us of your culture and then home we shall return.

 

King Vlan stops speaking. King Cosmos and Queen Popotte turn to each other and have a whispered conversation. Then they turn back to the travellers.

 

King Cosmos: We do not welcome visitors who bring anarchy to our land. You’ll spend the night in prison while your punishment is planned.

 

Enter Princess Fantasia from the right of the stage with her oboe. The residents of Cratergate turn to her and bow. Prince Caprice starts forward towards King Cosmos in protest of his verdict, but then pauses as he hears Princess Fantasia speak.

 

Princess Fantasia: Mum? Dad? What’s going on? Won’t you come back in? The orchestra are ready – the celebrations are to begin!

 

Orchestra Member: King Cosmos did not answer, so Fantasia took her oboe out to play.

[Music plays]

 

Orchestra Member: Intrigued by the familiar tune, Prince Caprice dared to look her way.

 

Orchestra Member: He could not see her from his place but her music was still heard. Filled with compassion and emotion, it made his heart soar like a bird.

 

[Music stops]

 

The scene freezes. Prince Caprice turns to the audience.

 

Prince Caprice: Something in me has awoken. What? I can’t explain. That music filled me up with hope – it’s absence brings me pain. Whoever played that oboe has made my heart ignite. I must meet the oboist who has brought my life such light.

 

He turns back his previous position. Princess Fantasia walks across the stage to stand directly in front of her parents. Everyone on stage follows her movements, turning as she crosses the stage. She looks from her parents, to the travellers and then back to her parents.

 

Princess Fantasia: [Crossly] Father! You did promise there would be no punishments today!

 

King Cosmos opens his mouth to speak but is interrupted.

 

Queen Popotte: [To King Cosmos] She’s right Cosmos, you did indeed, since it’s Fantasia’s birthday.

 

King Cosmos: [Stammering] B-but…

 

Princess Fantasia: No, not a chance! You’ll let them go!

 

Orchestra Member: Her voice shook with derision

 

Princess Fantasia: In fact, they shall join my party at the palace

 

King Cosmos: [gasps]

 

Princess Fantasia: [Haughtily]: That – is – my – decision. [Turning to the travellers] Introduce yourselves, please, aliens, names must be exchanged.

 

King Vlan: [Bowing] King Vlan of France, I thank you, Princess, for all you have arranged.

 

King Vlan steps back and Microscope steps forward and sinks into a low bow.

 

Microscope: I’m Microscope, the scholar. [He steps back]

 

There is a pause as it is Prince Caprice’s turn to step forward. King Vlan and Microscope look at him, as does Princess Fantasia.

 

King Cosmos: Tell Fantasia who you are!

 

Queen Popotte: This boy looks odd – [to King Vlan] does he not speak? Or is he just bizarre?

 

 

Prince Caprice: [Clearing his throat angrily at Queen Popotte, then turning to Princess Fantasia] Forgive me, I am Prince Caprice, [Bowing low] forever in your debt. Your music made me speechless, and I’m ecstatic we have met!

 

Microscope: [Excited] Ho-ho! Goodness, love is starting, I believe.

 

King Cosmos: Hah! It’s nice to see aliens joke about the incurable disease. You can tell me how you punish those who become contaminated. Do you push them into a volcano? Oh, I can’t wait to be educated!

 

The travellers look confused and frightened.

 

Well come on, to the palace then, we’ll teach you of our nation. Off we go to party hard and start the celebration.

 

Exit Cratergate residents, Moon Guards, King Cosmos, Queen Popotte, Princess Fantasia, King Vlan and Microscope. Prince Caprice is still on stage looking bewildered.

 

Prince Caprice: The moon people do not know love? Are their minds inept?

Well, Fantasia, I’ll teach you love. This challenge, I accept.

 

Exit Prince Caprice.

 

 

 

[SCENE 7]

 

Rocko, Corosol, Gem and Flicky are sitting on the left side of the stage. They are outside in one of the palace gardens.

Enter Prince Caprice and Princess Fantasia from the right side. Princess Fantasia comes on stage first with Prince Caprice following.

 

Orchestra Member: Princess Fantasia was simply unique. She had that ‘je ne sais quoi’ that had your curiosity pique.

 

Orchestra Member: Prince Caprice found that his feelings grew truer, but try as he might he was unable to woo her.

 

Orchestra Member: Fantasia ignored his poetry. Flowers met a dead end. Eventually he decided he should try to become her friend.

 

Orchestra Member: She has shown him parts of moon life, guided him through craters, taken him to the slave market and to the doors of legislators.

 

Orchestra Member: He has asked her about her hopes and dreams, and found her intelligence hypnotic. When he is caught staring at her, she thinks he is quite idiotic.

 

Orchestra Member: Caprice now knows that true beauty is on the inside and difficult to find. Caprice looked at Fantasia and saw the beauty in her strong will and strong mind.

 

Orchestra Member: So here we are, week 3 on the moon and Caprice has asked, if Fantasia will grant him permission to watch her teaching her class.

 

Princess Fantasia motions for Prince Caprice to take a seat on the front right corner of the stage. He sits and she turns and walks towards her students. The students turn towards her and start cheering.

 

[Music plays: song Ready for Music Time]

 

Speaking during the introduction

Princess Fantasia: [Smiling and indicating with her hands for the students to get quiet] Now, now, class. Please settle down. Let’s all sit, take our seats on the ground

 

Everyone takes their seats including Princess Fantasia getting ready to sing the song

Princess Fantasia:

Rocko, Corosol, Gem, and Flicky pick up their instruments. They stand up, spinning around while getting up. They make a single-file line,

In their line, they spin and skip around the stage as they sing the chorus, following each other. Kind of like ‘Follow the leader’. After they do a full circle. They stand in a line horizontally across the stage, Rocko at the front facing Princess Fantasia. To the beat, they hop on their right leg twice, leaning to the right, then on their left leg twice, leaning to the left, as they wait for the next bit of singing. Princess Fantasia holds up the first sheet of paper and Rocko approaches her. Corosol, Gem and Flicky begin jogging to the beat on the spot. Rocko takes the sheet of Princess Fantasia, looks at it and then turns to the audience to show them the sheet (which has a big ‘F’ on)

I’m not sure!

He turns back to Princess Fantasia, hands her the sheet

Rocko spins as he moves to the back of the line behind Flicky. As they sing the chorus they dance around in a circle again, when they stop in a line at the end of the chorus, Corosol is at the front

[Shouts] Now let’s repeat and sing

 

During the chorus Flicky leads the circle as they dance around again. Prince Caprice runs over to Princess Fantasia, offers her a hand and she takes it and gets up. They join the procession around the stage, dancing together to the beat. They each play their instruments in between each line (2, 3, 4).

 

[CHORUS]

Rocko, Corosol, Gem, Flicky:

Dance, hop and skip let’s go!

Round and around we go

Instruments in hand we sway in line

We’re ready

We’re ready for mu-sic time

 

Prince Caprice and Princess Fantasia dance offstage on the final line of the song, while Rocko, Corosol, Gem and Flicky continue singing and stay on stage for the audience to clap, playing their instruments continuously while they finish singing.

 

[Music stops. Song finish]

 

Enter Microscope and King Vlan.

 

Exit Rocko, Corosol, Gem and Flicky

 

Microscope: But, sire! We must leave now. It’s the rational course!

 

King Vlan: Now what do you suggest, Microscope? [Sarcastically] A flying horse?

 

Microscope: I’d jump off the moon and just hope for the best! If not we stay here and it’s still a suicidal quest! Yes, if we try to get home we may take our last breath! But if King Cosmos sees Caprice’s love – we’re still sentenced to death!

 

King Vlan: Oh, Microscope – stop worrying – you’re going to get wrinkles. I believe love is like sugary sprinkles. It will all be fine – just follow Caprice’s direction! We can’t give up now that he’s finally made a connection!

 

Enter Melody. King Vlan and Microscope jump when they see her. She bows to King Vlan.

 

Melody: [Stuttering] My apologies for the interruption. My master sent me to fetch you. There’s a show at the palace and he says he expects you.

 

King Vlan: Ah, Melody, don’t whimper – we won’t bite or kick! We’ll go to your master – now take us there quick!

 

Exit Melody with King Vlan and Cosmos following.

 

 

 

[SCENE 8]

 

The scene takes place in the moon palace. King Cosmos and Queen Popotte are sitting on the far left of the stage on thrones. King Vlan is seated next to King Cosmos, with Microscope on his other side. Princess Fantasia is sitting next to Queen Popotte, with Prince Caprice on her other side. Prince Caprice has a bag with apples inside that he has brought from Earth. Melody, now a slave, is serving the group with drinks and food. King Cosmos is animatedly talking to King Vlan – Microscope and Queen Popotte listening in. Prince Caprice is trying to engage Princess Fantasia in conversation.

 

Prince Caprice: [To Princess Fantasia, whispers loudly and urgently] Imagine feeling stronger than you ever have before.

 

Princess Fantasia: [To Prince Caprice, excited] Do you mean like soldiers wearing armour in a war?

 

Prince Caprice: [Titters and shakes his head, whispers again] Well, n-yes, but on the inside as this happens in your mind. It’s like waking up to light, when you previously were blind. It makes you want to learn and live and jump and dance and fight. In those books you read, my princess, have you heard of such a light? [He gets irritated as she turns away from him grimacing] Fantasia dear, please answer me – does your heart not beat?

 

Princess Fantasia: [Haughtily] Oh, enough now with your nonsense – I can’t bear to hear you bleat!

 

The group freezes.

 

Orchestra Member: The music you’re about to hear is separate from our song. It’s a favourite of the Moonfolk – but in this show it does belong. Their original choreography shall put us in a trance. The Moon Dancers will honour King Cosmos guests with a truly magical dance.

 

Enter the Moon Dancers who take their positions on stage. As they come on the stage Princess Fantasia holds up a hand to silence Prince Caprice who is trying to speak again. Everyone looks up at the dancers.

 

The Moon Dance Leader steps forward towards the royal group and clearing his/her throat. The royal group looks at the Leader who bows low to King Cosmos, Queen Popotte and Princess Fantasia.

 

Moon Dance Leader: This piece is called (insert name of piece), a (surname of composer) composition.

 

Queen Popotte: [to King Vlan] They come daily with a new dance – that’s a royal Moon tradition.

 

 

[Music plays – choice song]

 

Dancers dance as the royal group watches.

 

[Music stops]

 

Dancers bow to royal group, then to audience. Exit Moon Dancers.

 

 

Exit King Cosmos, Queen Popotte, King Vlan, Microscope and Melody. Prince Caprice gets up, walks to the middle of the stage where he takes an apple out of his bag and starts eating it. His back is to the princess. Princess Fantasia walks over to him and is standing behind him

 

Princess Fantasia: Is something troubling you, friend Caprice? Please tell me of your woe?

 

Prince Caprice: [Head bowed] Each time you name me as your ‘friend’ I’m dealt another blow. I’ve never cared for someone so, yet you are unaffected. I find you unbelievable but my feelings are rejected.

 

Fantasia looks at him puzzled. Caprice turns towards her. She opens her mouth to speak but then gazes at the apple in his hand.

 

Princess Fantasia: Pray tell, what is that in your hand, that shines so deep and red?

 

Prince Caprice looks surprised and glances down at the apple.

 

Prince Caprice: This here? It is a fruit of Earth. An apple, a delicious spread. [He takes another apple out of his pack and holds it out for Fantasia]. For you, Fantasia…

 

Princess Fantasia: [Warily] Another gift?

 

Prince Caprice: I swear this has no strings. I wish to share the fruit that grew in the orchard of Earth’s kings.

 

Orchestra Member: He passed her the apple and bowed like a knight. Then they stared into each others’ eyes as the princess took her first bite.

 

Orchestra Member: A fruit of Earth – so pure and fresh – a food we take for granted. A fruit so foreign up in space, for the moon people was enchanted.

 

Orchestra Member: An apple a day keeps the doctor away – have you ever heard the phrase? Eating an apple would heal Fantasia in one of many ways.

 

Orchestra Member: Over the past weeks of time together, of learning and respect, Fantasia was still a moon person, who love could not affect.

 

Orchestra Member: The apple’s magic coursed her veins and helped to activate, the part of our brains that let us love – where feelings liberate.

 

Orchestra Member: And so the emotions that Caprice had previously declared, were finally understood by Fantasia, who realised these feelings were shared.

 

[Music stars. Song begins ‘Eternally Free’]

 

Princess Fantasia:

Prince Caprice walks round Princess Fantasia until he is standing facing her front. He looks at her face and takes her hand. She looks at him in the eye

 

Prince Caprice: [Confidently] The future is uncertain, but we are together now. I will get us a blessing from your father– this is my vow.
