There are 8 suggested activities below for the teacher to complete in order to prepare for teaching  ‘lesson content’ for lesson 9

1. Discussion: Consolidation & the Flute:

The discussion this week focuses on consolidating what has been learned so far – recap using preparation from all previous lessons

It also focuses on the flute

2. Recap the Story so far:

The first clip is with the narration, the second is without

Recap events in the story, taking notes about the tone of each section

The third clip is the final chorus and verse of the music – this will be the focus of the lesson


3. Recap Instrument Timbres:

– Timbre is the distinctive sound of an instrument.

– Each of the instruments have been recorded playing the introduction from Voyage to the Moon

– Listen to each of the recordings to hear the distinctive differences between each instrument and take note of their qualities/tone

4. Flute – sound & appearance:

Become familiar with the flute and distinguish it from the oboe

  • Watch video of a flautist playing a flute
  • Listen to the introduction of ‘Voyage to the Moon’ being played by the flute only and then by the oboe only – note the difference in timbre (distinctive sound)
  • The flute can be heard during the final chorus with the other instruments and also plays the second half of the final verse of the music (final instrument heard)

5. Final Verse and Chorus: Who’s Playing?

Become familiar with the instrument solos in verse 3 of the music to hear the difference between the oboe and the flute.

Note down tone of each part played by each instrument.
